KLA-Tencor setup high-precision manufacturing plant in Singapore
Filed Under Metrology, Video Gallery
The world’s largest semiconductor metrology and yield management company, KLA-Tencor, has announced that it will setup its first Asian high precision manufacturing plant in Singapore. The reasons for picking Singapore are primary due to the island’s strong precision engineering and semiconductor industries. Around 70% of the KLA-Tencor’s customers are located in Asia. Setting up a manufacturing plant in Asia will further enhance the company’s service to its customers (Ref). The new facility will be located at 4 Serangoon North Ave 5, in Singapore.
Since the merger of KLA and Tencor in 1997, KLA-Tencor’s growth strategy is apparently through the acquisition of other smaller companies. Instead of relying solely on in-house R&D effort, KLA-Tencor has sought to expand its market share and technology through acquiring other companies. For example, last year KLA-Tencor acquired Therma-Wave, a metrology company specializing on inline thickness measurement. This year, it is going to acquire Belgium’s ICOS Vision Systems, a Belgium-based maker of inspection equipment for semiconductor packaging and interconnect applications. The ICOS acquisition signals an expansion for KLA-Tencor beyond semiconductor semgent to solar and LED segments (Ref).
