AMD has launched a new initiative ‘Changing the Game’ yesterday. To be frank, I was a bit baffled at first by the title of the initiative. Console gaming like Xbox, Playstation and Nintendo Wii, as well as PC and video gaming have been around for years, so what is the hype to change gaming?

After reading the news release (Ref), I started to understand that the AMD’s initiative is about changing our perspective of gaming. Gaming has long been associated with bad stigma such as violent, abusive and sexual content. Parents and teachers generally abhors gaming and try to distract their children from excessive gaming. In 2005, Hillary Clinton even blamed gaming as “a silent epidemic of media desensitization” and “stealing the innocence of our children”. Then why hypes up on gaming? AMD’s new initiative apparently is advocating that there is a possibility for new experience in gaming. Gaming can be an excellent interactive media for educational and social goodness. For example, gaming can be used to increase the awareness of global warming, climate change, as well as educational tools for mathematics and sciences. What is necessary to engage the young minds is to make educational and social gaming as entertaining and engaging as the current games. AMD’s President and COO said

…there is also an opportunity to use that same expertise to positively affect education and social change…AMD Changing the Game is an initiative of the newly formed AMD Foundation with a mission to inspire young people to learn critical education and life skills by equipping them to create fun and engaging digital games that help generate awareness around social issues.

Personally, I do hope to see more educational games that are on par with those fighting and racing games. Then I would probably consider buying a game console for my kids.
