November 19th, 2008 01:39 PM - Mitrionics Announces Support for Intel® Xeon® 7300 Quad Socket Hybrid Computing Development System Featuring Xilinx Virtex®-5 FPGAs on Nallatech Front Side Bus (FSB) In-Socket Modules Supercomputing 2008, Austin, TX, November 17, 2008 – Mitrionics, Inc., today announced that it is working with Xilinx and Nallatech to support the Mitrion™ Virtual Processor and the Mitrion Software Acceleration Platform, on Xilinx FPGA-based, Nallatech FSB-FPGA modules for Intel Xeon® 7300 quad socket server platforms. The result will be a Hybrid Computing Development System that is a complete package of hardware, software and tools. The system will include a license for the Mitrion Virtual Processor (MVP) plus the Mitrion Software Development Kit with parallel programming language and working example code, and is scheduled for availability in Q1 2009. Mitrionics is located in booth #1738 at Supercomputing 2008 and Nallatech is in booth # 281. “A tightly coupled, high bandwidth, low latency, embedded FPGA-CPU hybrid platform with shared system memory is very attractive for computationally intensive algorithms where throughput and power are concerns” said Ivo Bolsens, CTO, Xilinx. “The Mitrionics development system makes this exciting technology much more accessible to the development community.” “Mitrionics and Xilinx have worked closely together for a number of years, demonstrating strong technical achievements and early success in the marketplace,” said Mike Calise, executive vice president and general manager for Mitrionics, Inc. “This is a very exciting time for both companies as our technologies are enabling Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGAs to be delivered on a much broader scale via Nallatech’s highly configurable in-socket FSB-FPGA modules for Intel’s top-of-the-line quad socket server platform.” "There is high interest from customers and third party independent software vendors (ISV’s) in our Intel® Xeon® FSB-FPGA accelerator modules" said Allan Cantle, Founder and President of Nallatech. "The tight integration between the Xilinx Virtex®-5 FPGA and the Intel® Xeon® processors, combined with the Mitrionics’ MVP provides customers with a compelling platform that can be used to dramatically accelerate their applications." Nallatech’s FSB-FPGA module family for the Intel® Xeon® 7300 MP platform provides unparalleled flexibility to tune system resources to application requirements. This includes 1 to 3 separate FSB-FPGA modules per system with 8GB/sec of peak bandwidth each, 1 to 4 high-density Virtex®-5 FPGAs with local SRAM memory per module, the ability to cable high-speed serial interfaces directly into a module, and up to 256GB of system memory. The Xilinx and Virtex-5 FPGAs, with Xilinx ISE Foundation™ synthesis and place & route software will work in conjunction with the MVP, Mitrion Virtual Processor and Mitrion Software Development Kit to enable tremendous application acceleration through parallel processing. Over the past four years, Mitrionics and Xilinx have successfully delivered their FPGA-enabling technologies worldwide on systems from SGI, the leader in reconfigurable computing, with particular customer success in the field of genome informatics, and with the Mitrion-Accelerated BLASTn application. Now this concept is delivered as commercially off the shelf hardware from Xilinx and Mitrionics’ mutual partner, Nallatech. Mitrionics Hybrid Computing Development Systems are designed for industry, academics, government agencies, genome centers, data services providers, and independent software vendors (ISVs) that are interested in exploring the benefits of breakthrough hybrid computing architectures in practical workstation or server configurations. The applications that benefit from a system with at least two optimized compute processor types are those within genome informatics, Internet data processing, Business process optimization. These demanding integer-centric and transcendental floating point functions benefit from the variable bit width operations and fine grain parallelism inherent to Xilinx FPGA accelerators tightly coupled with Intel’s FSB bus architecture.
